Sandy is a lucky girl. IDR+ was asked to save a heartworm-positive 3-year-old Golden Retriever/Brittany Spaniel-mix from a small rural shelter, and we said yes. When she arrived in a foster home to prepare for treatment, it became apparent that she was also pregnant! Surprise! She gave birth to 9 puppies, who are also up for adoption. When she is finished nursing the pups, she can start preparing for heartworm treatment, which should be finished by Jan 20. In the foster home, she is a wonderful houseguest. She is quiet and keeps her crate clean. She efficiently goes outside to do her business and wants to go back inside for cuddle time. Sandy is very food motivated, but she needs to learn to take treats nicely. She knows ‘sit,’ but that’s about it, so obedience training will be required to ensure her success. Sandy has not been mingled with the other adult dogs in the foster home while she is nursing, but she seems like she will be fine with a slow intro. Our adoption radius is 4 hours from Chicago, and only approved applications can meet her in her foster home.
