About IDR+

Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus operates as a not-for-profit organization based in Northern Illinois. The goal of IDR+ is to rescue animals in need, to place them into responsible homes, and to educate the public about the Doberman breed. Our rescue animals come from animal control organizations, humane societies, and owner give-up situations in Illinois and surrounding states.

Training

To ensure the success of our adoptions, IDR+ endorses POSITIVE training programs to build trust, communication, and skills between people and their dogs. Much has been learned about animal behavior over the years, and balanced, aversive, and punishment-based training methods are not effective long-term and can cause increased fear, mistrust, negative association, and aggression. Take things slowly with your new dog and only use positive training to build trust, communication, and skills.

Health

When adopting a member of any breed, you need to do your research and familiarize yourself with common health issues. Unfortunately, Dobermans have a number of genetic pre-dispositions, and all adopters need to be aware and understand what to look for.

Breeders

IDR+ understands that some families truly want the Doberman puppy experience, but we don’t often have puppies available in rescue, and not everyone wants to adopt an adult. We would like to point families in the right direction to get a puppy responsibly and ethically (not necessarily quickly or cheaply).
